Governor Rochas Okorocha Said 10 Youths Stole Some Leaflets of Its Cheques

OWERRI—IMO State government has said about 10 youths that allegedly stole some leaflets of its cheques have been arrested and will soon be charged to court.
The government said the momemt the crime was discovered; it notified the affected commercial banks not to honour the cheques.

Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to Governor Rochas Okorocha, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, in a statement, however, did not disclose the names of the youths.

According to him, “the only problem the government had with the issue of cheques was when some youths, who decided to be tools in the hands of the opponents of the government stormed the Imo International Trade Centre, where the personnel of Imo Youth Must Work Programme were collecting their cheques, and the intruders not only attacked those issuing the cheques, but capitalized on the confusion occasioned by the unwarranted attack, to make away with a good number of the cheque booklets.”

The statement explained that following the development, government had no other option than to notify the banks concerned to cancel all the cheques with the serial numbers of the stolen cheque booklets.
“The notified banks acted accordingly and about 10 of those who took the cheques have been arrested and will be charged to court in a matter of days”, he said.
Although the government did not give the names of the alleged suspects or the security agency that arrested them, the CPS, noted that “those who are not happy that the state government has cleared all the salary arrears owed to its workers have been trying to distort the credits associated with the payment of these salary arrears and they are the ones behind the bounced cheque claim”.

While saying that the salary arrears of parastatal workers were ready, the statement however explained that “the only reason they have not been paid was the inability of the state government and the leaders of the organised labour in the state to reach a consensus on what should be the fate of the workers in these affected parastatals after the payment of the salary arrears, since the managements of the parastatals have already been concessioned.”
