Whether you’re looking for your first job, changing careers, or simply networking,LinkedIn has become a one stop shop. While LinkedIn provides you with a step-by-step guide on how to become an “All-Star” (adding current position, a summary to highlight your experience, charities that you support), there are a few things that their tutorial doesn’t tell you. Below are a few tips to clean up your LinkedIn profile and set you apart from the rest.
- Change Your Profile Picture
The first thing people look at after your name is your picture; therefore it is important to make sure your profile picture is fitting with your personal brand. Think of your profile picture as your first impression; you want to look put together (this means no group pictures or pictures from a night out). You can still get creative with profile pictures; think cropping the picture in a unique way, black and white, or changing the angle.
- Re-write Your LinkedIn Headline
Do you want to show up at the top of LinkedIn search results? Well, your headline is where it’s at. Be thoughtful in choosing keywords that your target audience might use to search for you. Instead of simply listing your current position, try writing a short description that is memorable and meaningful.
- Add the Extras
LinkedIn has come a long way; a platform that was once career focused and text heavy is now branching out (while still staying professional of course). Users are now able to include links to videos, images, documents, presentations, and even have the ability to add a background picture (think Facebook but less personal—aka no pictures of the family vacation). Use this as an opportunity to get your hard work out there and make your profile visually appealing.
- Customize Your URL
Claim your LinkedIn profile as your own and customize your URL. It takes seconds and will eliminate the 1000 number and letter combination that LinkedIn defaults you.
How to customize your URL:
- From the Profile header (found between Home and Connections) click “Edit Profile”
- Then click “Edit” next to the URL you see below your picture
- On the right panel you will see “Customize your public profile URL”
- Change your URL and click “Set Custom URL”
This feature only takes seconds and it is a small touch to make your profile 100% your own.
LinkedIn, like any resume, is only useful if it is up-to-date. Make sure you are taking advantage of all that the platform has to offer as to not miss out on great opportunities and connections—after all, you never know who will stumble upon your profile!
